We, Terry and Evelyn, along with our 4 children, moved to Colborne to start a market garden on a few acres of land. Our farm, named after the sweet Blue Barn located on the property, aims to provide healthy, seasonal vegetables, herbs and flowers to the local community and visitors alike. We practice regenerative agriculture, using the no-dig method, growing with compost and most importantly; without chemicals. We look forward to sharing what we learn and grow in the season ahead!

Canadian Mangalitsa Farms

Canadian Mangalitsa Farm

MEAT

Quality Mangalitsa Pigs & Lamb, Ethically Raised

These curly-haired pigs, native to Hungary, are known as the “Kobe beef of pork” due to the colour and marbling of the meat, which is sometimes mistaken for beef. The perfect balance of meat and fat creates an unbeatably delicious and tender cut, which is also rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Mangalitsas are a fatty type of local and rare pig breeds with an increasing presence in the niche pork market in Hungary and in other countries.

In order to achieve this high level of quality, we don’t use antibiotics or hormones and provide only organic feed to our free-range animals, which makes for lean and healthy meat.We spend as much time as we can to nurture our animals, without interfering with their natural mothering instincts after birth. We care for the well-being of our animals and treat them like family! Every detail counts, including when to cut the grass in the pasture to ensure quality forage for the farm animals during summer.
Our large property provides a great environment for the animals, allowing them space to roam. This also serves our clients well when they visit our farm

Cardboard Reality

PRODUCE  |  ARTISAN CRAFTS

We are artists who are passionate about ecology. On our farm we believe in low impact sustainable agriculture that feeds the soil, rather than depletes it. (We are particularly inspired by the writings and ideas of Masanobu Fukuoka & Ruth Stout). Our market garden uses no-till permaculture principles to grow produce that is as beautiful as it is delicious. We focus on cultivating colourful heirloom varieties that differ from what is available at most grocery stores. Our aim is to provide healthy, pesticide free produce and cut flowers, and to make them available in season to members of our community.

“We are so excited to be vendors at the Cobourg Farmers’ Market because we are passionate about connecting with our community through good food. The market gives us the ability to connect both with consumers and like-minded producers, who believe there can be an alternate to the disconnection in our predominant food system. It is wonderful to be able to grow healthy products, but the real joy is in seeing them enjoyed. As city transplants that fell in love with the country, the market is one of our favourite social events. We are privileged to be able to join a community with such a long lineage and tradition, and even more privileged to have a venue to do what we love – bring our customers healthy products for their tummies, and artful goods for their souls.”

Cedar Hedge Farm

PRODUCE

As stewards of the land it’s our responsibility to make sure not only the food but also the land is healthy. By using natural fertilizers, botanicals and companion planting as well as fostering an environment for predatory birds and bugs, we have no need for commercial, man-made chemicals. The farm will be as organic as possible without formal certification. We hope to use more manpower than gas power and in the end create a self-sustaining environment. This means that we may not produce the prettiest vegetables but they will be healthy. Let’s face it, if we don’t have a few “bad” bugs, what would the “good” bugs eat? Good and bad is more about the effect on what we are trying to do than a judgement – we all have a purpose.

“I look forward to each Saturday morning at Cobourg Farms’ Market.  For me I do a lot of work on the farm on my own. The market allow me to connect with the community that comes out. Sharing stories and talking about just about anything. To me the thing that makes the Cobourg Market stand out is the people that get up, some as early as the farmers, and support us. With a kind word a chat and get their groceries for the week.”

Jeff's Kitchen Cobourg

Jeff’s Kitchen Cobourg

PREPARED FOODS

I’ve been working in kitchens since I was 15 years old. Life is an interesting thing; I never thought I’d spend my life working in hospitality but here I am all these years later expressing my most creativity in the kitchen.

Toronto has been a big influence on my life. I developed a food preparation style through experience having owned three restaurants during my time in the city.

We relocated in 2022 and set down roots in Cobourg. Best decision of my life! This community is unbelievable, so supportive with such openness to engage and connect. I jumped at the opportunity to become a vendor with Cobourg Farmers Market. It’s gifted me the opportunity to meet my neighbors and to introduce some of the dishes I’ve been making passionately for decades.

The pasta sauce I create was introduced to me in the early nineties by an excellent Italian chef, and the chicken pies origins began at Mullen and Cie in the 80’s with Chef Christine Mullen who continues to inspire me to this day.

I’m really just getting started on all the things I plan to make for you. Pop by the market this Saturday and say hi!
